Dumpster Rental in Savannah, From the Lanes to the Islands

Savannah has two very different dumpster jobs: tight renovation work in the Historic and Victorian districts, where the lane behind the house is often the only spot, and roomy suburban work out toward Pooler, Richmond Hill and the islands.

Street or driveway in Savannah?

Driveway, yard or private lot

  • Southside, Georgetown, Pooler and Richmond Hill homes usually have driveways that take a 10 or 20 yard container.
  • Many downtown houses have no driveway at all; a rear lane or a private parking pad is the next option.
  • On sandy soil and lawns, keep the container on pavement or ask for boards so it does not sink.
  • Island properties on Wilmington or Tybee have tight lots and bridges; tell the hauler the exact address.

Street, curb lane or sidewalk

  • Anything in a public street, lane or sidewalk in the city should be cleared with the City of Savannah first.
  • In the Historic District, squares, one-way streets and tour traffic make street placement hard; ask early.
  • Unincorporated Chatham County addresses go to the county instead.
  • State routes and port-traffic corridors involve GDOT and are not workable street spots.

Savannah placement rules to check

Who to askCity of Savannah for public streets and lanes inside city limits; Chatham County or the relevant town (Pooler, Tybee Island, Garden City) elsewhere.
Historic DistrictThe downtown National Historic Landmark District has design review for exterior work. A temporary container is a logistics question more than a design one, but confirm before it sits on a lane or square frontage.
LanesThe service lanes behind downtown and Victorian District houses are often the practical place for a small container. Do not block garages, utilities or neighbors' access.
Storm seasonAtlantic hurricane season runs June through November. If a storm is forecast, haulers may pull containers or delay drops; loose debris in an open box can become a hazard.

Rules change, and this page is general information, not legal advice. Confirm with the office named above before anything goes on a public street. More in the Southeast permit guide.

Sizes that fit Savannah jobs

  1. 10 yard: a downtown rowhouse bath or kitchen, where the lane fits nothing bigger.
  2. 20 yard: Southside and Pooler cleanouts, flooring jobs and moving-out loads.
  3. 30 yard: full renovations of Victorian District houses and larger roof tear-offs.
  4. 40 yard: commercial and warehouse work near the port and along the I-95 and I-16 corridors.

Dumpster rental in Savannah: the lane question

If you are renovating downtown, your dumpster rental in Savannah will probably sit in a lane. The city's original grid, with its squares and the service lanes running behind the houses, was laid out long before driveways. Many rowhouses and Victorian-era homes have a rear gate or carriage house on the lane and nothing at the front but a stoop and a sidewalk. A 10 yard container, and sometimes a 15 if the hauler has one, is often the most that fits.

Because lanes are public, the City of Savannah is the place to ask before a container goes there. The same applies to streets and sidewalks. We do not publish permit fees or timelines, which change; call the city.

Victorian District, Midtown and the Southside

South of Forsyth Park, the Victorian District and Thomas Square neighborhoods have wood-frame houses that are constantly being restored: old siding, lath and plaster, porch rebuilds. Lots are wider than downtown, and some have rear parking pads that can take a 20 yard container.

Further south, in Ardsley Park, Midtown and the Southside, ranch and mid-century houses have driveways and the work looks like anywhere else in Georgia: kitchens, baths, flooring and cleanouts. Pooler and Richmond Hill have newer subdivisions with HOAs. Read the covenants before you book.

Heat, sand and storms

Coastal Georgia is hot and humid for much of the year, and the soil is sandy. A heavy container on a lawn will sink, so keep it on concrete or ask the hauler for boards. Summer storms and the hurricane season from June through November affect scheduling. Tarp anything that will soak up water.

FAQ

What people ask before they book

Can I put a dumpster on a lane in downtown Savannah?

Lanes are often the practical spot, but they are public. Ask the City of Savannah before placing a container there, keep garages and utilities clear, and choose a size that fits without sticking into the cross street.

Do I need Historic District approval for a dumpster?

Design review in the Historic District covers changes to buildings, not usually a temporary container. Ask the city if your container will sit on a square or a prominent frontage.

What happens to my rental if a hurricane is coming?

Haulers often pull or delay containers ahead of a named storm. Ask the provider about their storm policy when you book between June and November.

Do you cover Tybee Island and Richmond Hill?

Haulers serving Savannah often reach Pooler, Richmond Hill, Wilmington Island and Tybee. Island delivery may cost more; ask when you call.
